Small Business Sale Statistics

In short

Axia Growth analysis of 4,554 closed small-business sales over $500K, aggregated and de-identified. Published sector medians run from 2.3x to 9.4x SDE for businesses with under $2M of earnings and 2.1x to 12.9x EBITDA above that. Of the 2,873 sales with a sector and size band assigned, 46.6% fall in the Under $500K SDE band. Data as of 2026-10-28.

Sale multiples by size band

The dataset sorts each sale into one of 7 size bands by its earnings: 3 SDE bands for businesses with under $2M of earnings and 4 EBITDA bands above that. For each band the table shows how many sales it holds, the lowest and highest median among sectors with enough sales to publish, and the share of the band's sales that sit in a published sector cell.

We don't average sector medians into one "overall" multiple, because a median of medians is not a statistic of the sales. Compare SDE bands with SDE bands and EBITDA bands with EBITDA bands; SDE vs EBITDA explains why the two measures aren't on the same footing.

Sale multiples by industry

13 sectors have at least one published size-band cell. Each cell shows the median multiple and its number of sales. A cell needs at least 10 sales to be published; below that it reads "not published (fewer than 10 sales)". Cells with 10 to 14 sales are flagged "small sample", because one or two sales can move their median.

51 of 93 sector and size-band cells are published. The full multiples table adds the 25th and 75th percentiles for every published cell, and each sector links to the industry guides that draw on it.

How many small businesses sold at each size

2,873 of the 4,554 sales have a sector and size band assigned, so the shares below are out of 2,873, not 4,554. The other 1,681 sales are in the headline count but could not be placed in a sector and size band, so they are left out of every cell.

The largest group is the Under $500K SDE band, with 1,340 sales (46.6%). These are counts of sales in the dataset, not of every business sold in the country.

Years covered

Sold dates in the dataset run from 1992-02-29 to 2026-04-05. The sales span several decades: 1,401 of the 4,554 (about 31%) closed in 2018 or later, and the rest are older. Multiples are not adjusted for the year of sale.

This release is version 1.0.0 of the dataset, generated 2026-10-28.

Methodology and data limits

How sales are cleaned, deduplicated and assigned to sectors and size bands is set out in the methodology on the multiples page.

Read the full methodology →

Data limits

Multiples are a reference point, not a valuation or an appraisal.

SDE or EBITDA basis is assigned by business size, not chosen per sale: a sale with under $2M of earnings is counted in an SDE band, $2M and up in an EBITDA band. Compare SDE medians with SDE medians and EBITDA with EBITDA.

A sector and size-band cell needs at least 10 sales to be published; below that it is suppressed rather than shown with a misleadingly solid number. Cells with 10 to 14 sales are published but flagged "small sample", because one or two sales can move their median.

Frequently asked questions

What multiple do small businesses sell for?

In Axia Growth's data, published sector medians run from 2.3x to 9.4x SDE for businesses with under $2M of earnings and 2.1x to 12.9x EBITDA above that, depending on sector and size. The full multiples table shows every published sector and band. Data as of 2026-10-28.

What is the difference between an SDE multiple and an EBITDA multiple?

SDE adds the owner's pay and benefits back to earnings; EBITDA doesn't. Smaller, owner-run businesses are priced on SDE and larger ones on EBITDA, so the dataset uses SDE bands under $2M of earnings and EBITDA bands above. See SDE vs EBITDA.

Where does this data come from?

Axia Growth analysis of 4,554 closed small-business sales over $500K, aggregated and de-identified. Only closed, sold transactions are used, and only aggregates are published: no business name, location or individual sale is shown.

How many sales are in the data?

4,554 closed sales. 2,873 of them have a sector and size band assigned and feed the size and industry tables; 51 of the 93 sector and size-band cells have at least 10 sales and are published.

Are these asking prices or sale prices?

Sale prices only. Every multiple is the price a business actually sold for divided by its SDE or EBITDA. Asking prices and active listings are not used.

How often is the data updated?

When the dataset is regenerated. This page shows version 1.0.0, generated 2026-10-28, and every figure on it is recomputed from the new release when that happens.

Can I cite these statistics?

Yes. Credit Axia Growth and link to https://axiagrowth.com/resources/small-business-sale-statistics. A ready-made citation is at the bottom of the page, and the published cells are available as a CSV file.
